Bangla On Android

Last march, I wrote a post on “How to install Bangla True type font on Android 1.6”. In last 2 months, I have noticed an increased number of hits from my readers on that post. Since that was written for Android 1.6 and 2.2 Froyo is in existence now along with many newer Android handsets, I think it is a time for few updates.

As my last post was a while ago, I thought “Why not make a page for this purpose?” . I am currently working on ways to put Bangla on newer systems, which I will put here on this page.

Written below is a set of instructions for having Solaimanlipi.ttf on your Android 1.6 systems. This seems to work on newer Android Phones too. But all these instructions come without any “Guarantee”, so, you are on your own! For Full Post Please Visit This Link

1. Get Solaimanlipi or Lohit fonts. (other unicode ones should do too)

2. Rename the font (one that’s chosen) to DroidSansFallback.ttf

3. Put the font into the SDCARD root.

4. Open terminal (oh! forgot to tell, you neet to be root)

5. Type the following and hit ENTER

su

6. Wait till $ sign turns into #

7. type the following and hit ENTER (mounting the system partition)

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

8. Then the following and hit ENTER

chmod 4755 /system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf

9. in following line we will overwrite the existing font with the one from SDCARD

dd if=/sdcard/DroidSansFallback.ttf of=/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf

10. Once typed the above, hit ENTER
11. REBOOT immediately using the following:

 reboot

I rebooted and now can read my favourite bangla forums. Can even login to them!!
Give it a try if you need!!!

Happy surfing!

Caution: Please note, for this process to work you will need a rooted Android Device. Rooting a purchased device could potentially void the warranty. So, please do it at your own risk.

  1. thanks for your blog. i am sue it would be very useful for installing bangla font in android phone.

but can you please tell me how to be root in HTC Wildfire s? i can enter the HBOOT menu. but here is no option for entering these codes. i cant open any terminal or anything like this. the only options i can see here are- FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, CLEAR STORAGE and SIMLOCK.

i know, this isnt the best place for seeking this kind of help. but, being a beginer i couldnt manage to find out or understand the solution.

    thank you.

  2. Dear Friends,

I have followed the above mentioned procedure but only could complete up to Step 8. After entering the command at step 9, I got the following message
“/system/fonts/DroidSansFallback.ttf cannot open for write: Read-only file system”. I have selected the R/W option in the system font file by File Manager (Super Manager).

Is there some one to help me out.

    Warm regards.

    Pasha

  3. Dear Mehedi,

I have tried all these to my LG P509. I could successfully install SolaimanLipi, Lohit, Rupali and also Nikosh. But no one is matching exactly. E kar, A kar and Ou Kars are after the letter. Can you please suggest me which font could be the best one for me.

    Regards.

    Pasha

samitnrega@gmail.com

  5. After Auto System update of my android Tablet “Acer IconiaTab A200” (from android 2.0 to 4.0.3) I’m surprised that I can read BANGLA. (“bdnews24/Bangla” & “Prothom Alo”) 99.9% accurately. So I guess Android 4.0.3 has incorporated Bangla…may be!!

  6. Correction on my last comment- with my Tablet (system updated from 2.0 to 4.0.3)…I can read Bangla accurately afte the update with Built in Browser, but not with Opera mini browser (which i downloaded extra to solve the problem before)……thnx

    1. From what my readers are mentioning, I am now starting to doubt if Newer version of Opera Mini is causing trouble. Thanks for letting me know.
